Setting The Stage

All living organisms in a food chain can be classified as a producer, consumer, or decomposer. Producers consist mainly of plants. Most consumers are herbivorous, omnivorous, and carnivorous animals. Decomposers, mainly bacteria and fungi, break down dead plants and animals to make nutrients in the soil.

The Task

  • Answer research questions using the links on the next page.
  • Research the various organisms in a particular ecosystem.
  • Identify examples of producers, consumers, and decomposers native to the ecosystem.
  • Make a classification chart (see the second page).
  • Identify the herbivore, carnivore, or omnivore in the chart.
  • Diagram a food web based on your research.
  • Place humans appropriately in the food web.
  • Label producers, consumers, and decomposers.
  • Use arrows  to show how the energy is transferred among the organisms in the food webs.
